Weight-loss Surgery

The Weight-loss Surgery Program at Mercy Hospital offers hope to people who are morbidly obese and have tried other methods of weight control. Our team works together to provide quality care to patients - from your initial meeting with our program coordinator through your surgery and after-surgery support groups. With our minimally invasive suite , Mercy features some of the most advanced technology in bariatric surgery.

Two types of weight-loss surgery

Lap-band

Lap-band is an adjustable treatment that can be changed to meet each patient's needs.  Surgeons implant an inflatable silicone band into the patient's abdomen.

Like a wristwatch, the band is fastened around the upper stomach to create a new, tiny stomach pouch that limits and controls the amount of food a person can eat.

Gastric bypass

Gastric bypass is a major operation that reduces the size of the stomach, thereby decreasing the amount of food that the stomach can physically hold.

At the same time, the small intestine is reconfigured so food bypasses the first and second segment of the intestines, reducing the number of calories that the body can absorb.
