The decision to have weight loss surgery is one that can change your life forever. Ask almost anyone who’s had the procedure done and they’ll tell you the same thing: they feel better than they ever have, they’re more active than ever before, and their self-image and confidence are at an all time high.

However, weight loss surgery is not for everyone. It’s a major operation usually reserved for people who have unsuccessfully tried to lose weight several times and have serious health complications related to their excess weight.

When determining whether a patient is a candidate for weight loss surgery, surgeons typically use the guidelines established by the National Institute of Health (NIH). These guidelines state that a candidate should have 100 pounds or more of excess weight, or a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater (What's your BMI?) or a BMI of 35 or greater with one or more co-morbid conditions. Keep in mind that these are only guidelines. An experienced surgeon will evaluate each patient using a larger set of criteria.

After meeting these guidelines, it’s also important for a candidate to meet the following criteria before surgery:

● Understand the risks of bariatric surgery

● Commit to dietary and other lifestyle changes as recommended by the surgeon

● Have a history of unsuccessful weight loss attempts

● Undergo a complete examination during medical tests
