Birth and Parenting Classes


Baby Care Basics
(Recommended for first-time parents: Last trimester)
This is a hands-on class, perfect for the first-time parent. Topics covered are bathing, crying, diapering, feeding, swaddling and other newborn parenting tasks. ($25 fee) Reservations required.

Childbirth Education Class
(Recommended time of attendance: Last trimester)
Full series of childbirth classes available. 1 (2 hours) night per week for 5 weeks, or 3 Saturday mornings (4 hours). Tour of Birth Center included. ($65 fee) Reservations required.

Infant Safety and CPR Class
(Recommended time of attendance: Last trimester)
Accident prevention and CPR skills to save an infant's life. Class size is limited ($10 fee) Reservations required.

Mom to Mom
(Recommended time of attendance: From birth to 1 year old)
This support group is great for mothers and babies during their first year together. The challenges and delights of motherhood are topics for discussion at this informal four times a month gathering. FREE! No reservations required.

Preparing to Breastfeed
(Recommended time of attendance: Last trimester)
Breastfeeding provides many advantages for mother and baby. This two-session class will help you learn how you and your baby can get off to a good start and avoid common problems. Successful breastfeeding often depends on the help and encouragement you receive, so we recommend you bring a support person with you. Part two class will teach you how to use a breast pump and store breast milk for use at a later time. A good class for a busy or working mother. ($30 fee) Reservations required.

Birth Center Tour for Children 
This is a guided tour of The Family Birth Center for siblings ages 4 – 12 years old with a new baby on the way. An adult must accompany child/children. Registration is NOT required. Meet in the main lobby of Mercy Southwest Hospital on the Second Sunday of each month at 1pm. THIS CLASS IS FREE!
